GALVESTON — A former business manager of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 450 pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to conspiracy to embezzle union funds, authorities said.
Ronald Witt, 65, of Galveston, admitted to using union money to pay for luxury trips for himself and friends, to remodel his house and for other personal expenses, Angela Dodge, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Houston, said in a statement.
In a Daily News story published July 12, Witt denied the allegations in the indictment that accused him and his wife of embezzling $150,203.
Dodge’s statement didn’t mention Anita Witt, the union’s financial secretary who was arrested along with her husband in July. An indictment accused the couple of conspiring to forge business records to cover up the unauthorized charges. The status of her case was unknown.
